ABOUT THE PROJECT
A Modern Marvel: The Construction of Second Vivekananda Bridge
SAHI, in partnership with Larsen & Toubro Limited, Pacific Alliance Group, and Parsons Brinckerhoff, helped construct India’s first multi-span, single-plane, cable-supported, extra-dosed bridge.
This bridge is a key component of a national program to upgrade essential infrastructure. It stands over the Hooghly River in Kolkata, West Bengal, running parallel to and about 50 meters downstream from the old Vivekananda Setu, which opened in 1932. The bridge stretches 880 meters (2,887 feet) long and 29 meters wide, carrying six lanes of high-speed traffic.
The structure is regarded as a “wonder of architecture” for overcoming the challenge of building a bridge that could handle significantly higher traffic volumes without blocking the view of the old Vivekananda Setu or overshadowing the historic Dakshineswar Kali Temple nearby.
For this achievement, Nivedita Setu received an Award of Excellence from the American Segmental Bridge Institute in the United States.
