St. Vincent Ferrer Prayer Park: A Landmark of Faith and Innovation
Rising above the town of Bayambang, Pangasinan, the St. Vincent Ferrer Statue stands as both a symbol of devotion and a feat of modern engineering.
Recognized by Guinness World Records as the tallest bamboo sculpture in the world, the statue pays tribute to Bayambang’s patron saint, St. Vincent Ferrer, while showcasing Filipino creativity and resilience.
Design and Construction
Height: 50.23 meters (164.8 feet), including its base
Materials: 60 tons of engineered bamboo and 600 tons of steel
Foundation: 7.5 meters deep, reinforced with 6,000 psi cement
Structure: Around 5,000 interlocking polygons form the statue’s body, with 700 polygons dedicated to the detailed head and hair
Built in just 10 months by more than 600 workers, the statue was designed to endure strong winds and typhoons, ensuring it remains a lasting landmark for generations.
History and Inspiration
The vision for the project came from Mary Clare Phyllis Quiambao, wife of Mayor Cezar Quiambao, after being inspired by a bamboo structure in Myanmar.
Determined to create a symbol of faith and identity for Bayambang, the local government and the Kasama Kita sa Barangay Foundation worked together to fund and realize the project.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on June 20, 2018, and less than a year later, on April 5, 2019, the statue was inaugurated. Its unveiling coincided with two historic anniversaries: the 400th year of the Saint Vincent Ferrer Parish and the 600th death anniversary of St. Vincent Ferrer.
